Plumbline — Legal Citation Verification

Plumbline is a Microsoft Word Add-in that verifies legal citations in real time. When an attorney cites a case in a brief, motion, or memorandum, Plumbline checks whether that case actually exists, whether the citation format is correct, and whether the case's holding supports the proposition it's being cited for.
Why It Matters
AI-assisted legal drafting is growing rapidly, and so is a dangerous side effect: hallucinated citations. Language models routinely fabricate case names, invent docket numbers, and produce citations to cases that have never existed. Courts have responded with sanctions, and the documented instances are accelerating — with the overwhelming majority occurring in 2025 alone.
Plumbline addresses this problem at the point of creation. Rather than catching errors after filing, it validates citations as attorneys write, directly inside the tool they already use every day.
Technical Architecture
Plumbline runs on a Cloudflare-native stack — Edge Workers for API logic, D1 for structured case and holdings data, KV for high-speed citation lookups, and R2 for document storage. The system currently covers Michigan state courts and the federal court system, with a national expansion roadmap that scales to all 50 states.
The holdings extraction pipeline leverages large language model inference to parse judicial opinions and classify case treatments, achieving sub-1% error rates on validated corpora across tens of thousands of processed cases.
